Bishop Mihail Pavel

Mihail Pavel (born September 6, 1827 in Lénárdfalva , then in Sathmar County , Hungary , now in Romania , † June 1, 1902 ) was Bishop of Oradea Mare (Oradea) of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church .

Life

Mihail Pavel, son of the teacher and church musician Konstantin Pavel and Maria geb. from Ardeleanu, attended the school in Satu Mare and the high school in Košice . He studied at the St. Barbara Institute in Vienna but had to return to his home country because of the Romanian Revolution of 1848 . He was able to continue and finish his studies in Ungvar . He was ordained a deacon on March 14, 1852 and a priest on March 21, 1852 .

On September 11, 1872, Mihail Pavel was elected Bishop of Gherla . Pope Leo XIII. confirmed this election on December 23, 1872. It was consecrated on January 26, 1873 by Ioan Vancea , the archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia in the cathedral of Blaj . On February 23, 1873 he was installed in his diocese in Gherla Cathedral . He organized the administration of the diocese and ordered parishes and deaneries.

On January 29, 1879 Mihail Pavel was elected Bishop of Oradea Mare (Großwardein) and on March 16, 1863 by Pope Leo XIII. approved. The solemn installation took place on June 8, 1879 in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Oradea. The organization of the diocese was his first task. He renovated the cathedral, built a boarding school for boys and set up a middle-class girls' school with boarding school.
