Ioan Szabó , also Ioan Sabo (born August 16, 1836 in Istrău, Sathmar County , Hungary ; † May 1, 1911 in Gherla ) was a Romanian-Greek Catholic bishop from Gherla, Armenopoli, Szamos-Ujvár ( German : Neuschloss / Armenierstadt ; Hungarian : Szamosújvár ).

Life

Ioan Szabó, the son of the priest Dimitru Sabo and the noble mother, attended elementary school and high school in Oradea . In 1853 he studied theology at the Pontifical Greek College of St. Athanasius in Rome and received his doctorate in theology on July 26, 1859 at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. On November 4, 1859, he was in the St. Nicholas Cathedral of Oradea (Oradea) by Bishop Vasile Erdely for priest celibacy consecrated. He became vice-rector and professor at the seminary of the diocese of Großwardein . On May 15, 1867 he was accepted into the cathedral chapter . Ioan Sabo spoke several languages, besides Latin and Greek, Romanian and Hungarian, he also spoke Italian, French and German. For Bishop Iosif Papp-Szilágyi he was an important collaborator in negotiations at the imperial court in Vienna and at the Holy See in Rome. He was a member of the delegation of the Romanian-Greek-Catholic bishops at the First Vatican Council in 1869/70. He represented the sick Bishop Iosif at the Provincial Synod in Blaj in 1872. When Bishop Ioan Vancea was appointed Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia , Bishop Iosif Ioan Sabo proposed as his successor. The emperor refused and preferred Mihail Pavel . Only after his appointment as Bishop of Oradea (Großwardein) in 1879 was Ioan Sabo appointed Bishop of Gherla, Armenopoli, Szamos-Ujvár on February 18, 1879.

On May 15, 1879, Pope Leo XIII confirmed . the appointment. It was consecrated on May 15, 1879 by Mihail Pavel, Bishop of Oradea (Großwardein). On August 18, 1879, he was installed in Gherla Cathedral in his diocese.

Bishop Ioan Sabo took part in the ad limina visit to the Holy Father in Rome in 1886, under the direction of Archbishop Vancea . He was particularly interested in catechesis not only in rural areas but in all public schools.

In 1886 he fell seriously ill and was bedridden for the last five years of his life. He had to be carried from the bed to his desk. But he tried to fulfill his duties as a bishop.

He died on May 1, 1911 and was buried in the crypt of Gherla Cathedral.
