Basil Hossu , also Vasile Hosszu (born August 16, 1866 in Târgu Mureș ( German : Neumarkt am Mieresch ; Hungarian : Marosvásárhely ), Grand Duchy of Transylvania ; † January 13, 1916 in Budapest ) was Romanian-Greek Catholic Bishop of Gherla, Armenopoli, Szamos-Ujvár ( German : Neuschloss / Armenierstadt ; Hungarian : Szamosújvár ).

Life

He attended primary school in Târgu Mureş and Reghin ( German : Sächsisch Regen ; Hungarian : Szászrégen ), the grammar school in Târgu Mureş. After graduating from high school, Archbishop Ioan Vancea sent him to the Pontifical Greek College of St. Athanasius in Rome and to the Pontifical Urban University in autumn 1882 , where he received his doctorate in philosophy on August 6, 1884 . Seriously ill he had to break off his theology studies and return home on July 5, 1887. Hardly recovered, he was back in Rome in the autumn of the same year to finish his studies. Due to his excellent services he was ordered by Pope Leo XIII. exempted from studying and admitted to the exams and finished it on November 13, 1887 with a doctorate in theology in Rome. On August 27, 1888, he was ordained a celibate priest in Blaj Cathedral by Archbishop Vancea , and the next day he was appointed Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Theological Seminary in Blaj. In 1898 he became a member of the cathedral chapter of the Archdiocese of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia .

By imperial decree of May 16, 1903 he was appointed Bishop of Lugoj and confirmed by the Pope on May 25, 1903. It was consecrated on September 21, 1903 by Victor Mihaly de Apşa , the archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia. The co-consecrator was Demetriu Radu , the bishop of Oradea . On September 21, 1903, he was installed in the Lugoj Cathedral in his diocese. He had the cathedral renovated, churches built and renovated, youth houses and parish schools built. He trained catechists and organized popular missions for the moral education of the faithful.

On November 15, 1911, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria appointed him Bishop of Gherla, Armenopoli, Szamos-Ujvár. Pope Pius X confirmed this appointment on December 10, 1911, and on August 11, 1912 he was enthroned in the Cathedral of the "Introduction-to-the-Temple" in Gherla. In his new diocese, too, the training of catechists and priests was his great concern.

The Budapest doctor Dr. George Bilaşcu was his friend and family doctor. Whenever he was in Budapest, he stayed with him for a few days and had himself examined. During his visit on January 13, 1916, he died unexpectedly. His body was transferred to Gherla and buried in the cathedral's crypt . His wish to be buried in the Nicula Monastery could not be fulfilled, as the time to build a worthy tomb was too short.

Basil Hossu was a cousin of Ioan Hossu, the father of Bishop Iuliu Hossu ; Cardinal in pectore who succeeded him.
