The Stierbergsteich in the Harz Montan region is a pond created for mining purposes near Rothesütte on the border of the Harz ( Saxony-Anhalt ) and Nordhausen ( Thuringia ) districts.
Geographical location
The Stierbergsteich is located in the southern Harz on the border of the Harz (Saxony-Anhalt) and southern Harz (Thuringia) nature parks between Trautenstein in the north-northeast (Saxony-Anhalt), Rothesütte in the southwest and Sophienhof in the east-southeast (both in Thuringia). The pond is located between the beech heads ( 603.1 m above sea level ) and the Stierberg ( 602.4 m ) in the east-northeast at an altitude of about 555 m . It is fed and drained by a small tributary of the Rappbode tributary Dammbach .
In the area of the pond, the border between the kingdoms of Prussia and Hanover used to run along today's border between Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia .
purpose
The Stierbergsteich was artificially created to store the impact water for a waterwheel located downstream. The pumps that lifted the pit water from the shafts of nearby mines , in which mostly red iron ore was mined, were operated by wheel .
hike
The Stierbergsteich is included as no. 48 in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin. The stamp box hangs in a shelter on the south-east bank of the pond ( ⊙ ).
