The Südharz Nature Park is located in the Nordhausen district in the north of Thuringia . Regulation of the resin located nature parks came into force on 31 December 2010, thus paving the fifth Nature Park in Thuringia. It is 267 km² in size. The carrier is the Südharzer Tourismusverband e. V. in coordination with the Kyffhäuser Nature Park .

The nature park comprises parts of the southern slope of the Lower Harz, the gypsum karst landscape of the adjoining Zechstein belt and the transition area to the North Thuringian red sandstone region . In the south the park is bordered by the valley of the helmets , on the other sides by the Thuringian border. Its western border is part of the German Green Belt . It borders in the east on the Karst Biosphere Reserve South Harz (Saxony-Anhalt), in the north on the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park and in the northwest on the Harz Nature Park (Lower Saxony) . The entire Harz is a large conservation area , which also includes the Harz National Park .

In the nature park there are Bach disappearance , karst springs , sinkhole lakes and sinkholes next to plaster walls part. Due to the many caves , numerous bat species live in the beech forests and find suitable roosts there, including the pug bat . There are also occurrences of wild cats and lynxes . Arid grasslands with orchids are the remains of former pastures and meadows on the karst areas.

The highest point in the South Harz Nature Park is the Große Ehrenberg ( 635.5  m above sea  level ).
