Thuringian Slate Mountains Nature Park / Upper Saale
The nature park Thuringian Slate Mountains / Upper Saale is a Nature Park in Thuringia . The Saale flows through it and includes the area around Loquitz , Sormitz and the Rennsteig in the eastern Thuringian Slate Mountains, the northern roofing of the Franconian Forest in Thuringia and the west of the East Thuringian Slate Mountains . In addition to the Hohenwarte reservoir , the Plothener pond area and the Orlasenke with orchid meadows are special attractions. Other attractions include the fairy grottoes near Saalfeld , the Bleilochtalsperre , Obernitzer Bohlen , the Stone Rose and Burgk Castle . The total area covers 800 km² in the districts of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt and Saale-Orla . The Thuringian Slate Mountains-Obere Saale nature park is directly connected to the Franconian Forest and Thuringian Forest nature parks . Together the three nature parks form a closed nature park area with approx. 4,000 km².
