Eduard Pumpernig

Eduard Pumpernig (born March 9, 1920 in Scheifling , Styria , † April 7, 1992 in Graz , Styria) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ).

Life

After attending elementary school , Eduard Pumpernig completed a humanistic grammar school , first in Graz and later in Sankt Pölten . After graduating from high school , he began studying theology . As a young man, Pumpernig was a founding member of the anti-fascist freedom movement in Austria , a resistance group against National Socialism . On July 23, 1943, Pumpernig was arrested by the Secret State Police in Vienna . He was on 11 August 1944 before the People's Court made and the process Pumpernig to 10 years in prison convicted. In 1945 he was liberated and returned to Styria. By collaborating with the Gestapo, he was able to save his skin, but brought down several other resistance members who were sentenced to death.

Here he was still one of the founding members of the Styrian People's Party in 1945 . In 1959 he was briefly deputy district chairman of the 6th Graz district Jakomini . In 1963 he also sat for a few months as a member of his party, the ÖVP, in the Graz municipal council .

In November 1974 Eduard Pumpernig was sworn in as a member of the Federal Council in Vienna . He remained on the Federal Council for almost eleven years, until June 1985. His last position was from January to June 1985 as President of the Federal Council .
