President of the Federal Council (Austria)

The President of the Bundesrat (short: Federal President ) is the chairman of the Austrian Federal Council . The President of the Federal Council in the second half of 2020 will be Andrea Eder-Gitschthaler (ÖVP, Salzburg).

To the title

The chairman of the Federal Council - as the function is called according to the Federal Constitutional Act - has the official title of President of the Federal Council , his deputies have the title of Vice-President of the Federal Council .

selection

The federal states take turns in chairmanship every six months in alphabetical order.

The first member of the Bundesrat in the party that holds the majority of the seats in the respective federal state assumes the role of President of the Bundesrat. Since Lex Kampl came into force on June 25, 2005, the election of another member (from the same party in the same federal state) has been possible by the respective state parliament.

The two deputies are elected by the Federal Council. Together with the President of the Federal Council and at least two secretaries and two stewards, they form the Presidium of the Federal Council.

tasks

The President of the Federal Council has the following tasks:

  • External representation of the Federal Council
  • Convening of the Federal Council to meetings
  • Chairing the meetings (alternating with the two vice-presidents)
  • Exercise of the right of disposal over the parliamentary premises used by the Federal Council
  • Chairmanship of the Federal Assembly (alternating with the President of the National Council )
