Ioan Bob , Latinized Joannes Babb , (born October 14, 1739 in Orman , Doboka County , Grand Duchy of Transylvania ; † October 2, 1830 in Blaj ), was the Romanian-Greek Catholic Bishop of Făgăraş .

Life

The noble son of Andrei Bob from Copalnic-Manastur and his wife nee Timandi attended elementary school in Cluj , the high school graduated with the Jesuits in Cluj. In 1764 he joined the Basilians as a novice . On December 25, 1777 he was ordained a deacon and on April 6, 1778 a religious priest.

On October 21, 1782, Emperor Joseph II appointed him Bishop of Făgăraş. This appointment was confirmed by Pope Pius VI. on December 15, 1783. He was consecrated on June 6, 1784 by his predecessor, Bishop Grigore Maior, who resigned on September 22, 1783, and on July 2 of the same year he was solemnly enthroned in his diocese. He wrote several theological books in Romanian, as well as a Romanian-Latin-Hungarian dictionary with 11,000 Romanian words ( Dictionariu romanesc, lateinesc si unguresc , 2 vols., Cluj 1822-1823).

Bishop Ioan Bob died on October 2, 1830, at the age of 91 years of merit both to the Romanian Uniate Church and to the Romanian nation.
