Candedo is a town and municipality in north-eastern Portugal , in the Trás-os-Montes region .

The municipality is located on the Rio Rabaçal , a Spanish-Portuguese border river.

history

Central square in the abandoned historic center of Espinhoso

Before the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century AD, the region was settled by the Celtiberians and characterized by the Castro culture .

The present-day town of Candedo probably emerged only during the course of the new settlements after the Reconquista . The most important town in today's municipality was Espinhoso, which was run as an independent municipality in 1225 with only about 60 inhabitants. Candedo and Aboá were still smaller settlements.

During the Spanish rule from 1581 to 1640, especially under Philip IV (Philip III of Portugal), Espinhoso refused to pay the constantly increasing taxes and to accept Spanish clergy. As a result, it lost its independence and Candedo became the official parish seat.
