Eugène Berger (born December 4, 1960 in Bettembourg ; † January 21, 2020 ) was a Luxembourg politician ( Democratic Party ) and mountaineer .

biography

Berger attended primary school in Howald and graduated from the Lycée de Garçons in Luxembourg City . Between 1983 and 1985 he worked for the Administration de l'enregistrement et des domaines . In 1985 he started teaching at the Institut supérieur d'études et de recherches pédagogiques (ISERP) and then became a primary school teacher in Krauthem and Berchem, in the municipality of Roeser. He practiced the teaching profession until 1994.

Rockclimbing

Eugène Berger had been an active mountaineer since he was 12. On October 1, 1992, he became the first Luxembourger to climb Mount Everest , whereupon he was named " Sportsman of the Year " by the Luxembourg Sports Press Association . A report from Berger's experience was published by Revue- Verlag with “Right at the top” .

Berger was President of the Fédération luxembourgeoise d'escalade et d'alpinisme (FLERA) for many years .

politics

Berger's popularity due to his ascent of Mount Everest contributed significantly to his being elected as a candidate for the DP in the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies in 1994. In 1999 he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies and appointed State Secretary for the Environment in the Juncker-Polfer government. In the 2004 chamber elections, he missed entry into parliament, but moved back to parliament in 2007 after his party colleague Henri Grethen moved to the European Court of Auditors . In 2009 and 2013 he made the leap back to parliament straight away, whereas in the chamber elections he only moved up to parliament with the appointment of Pierre Gramegna as finance minister. Since 2013 he has been the leader of the DP group in the Chamber of Deputies. In addition, he had been a councilor in Roeser since 2011 .

Private

Berger was married and had a son and a daughter. He lived in Peppingen . On January 17, 2020, Berger was hospitalized after attempting suicide . He died on January 21, 2020.
