The Asselersand (also Asseler Sand ) is a former inland island on the Lower Saxony side of the Lower Elbe in the Kehdinger Land , near Drochtersen in the Stade district .

location

The Asseler Sand is bounded on the northeast side by the Schwarztonnensander Nebenelbe , on the south side (outer dike) by the Barnkruger Süderelbe and on the west side by the Ruthenstrom , which, in addition to drainage, serves as an access for sports boats to the Asseler Hafen. At the eastern tip of the sand, the Barnkruger Loch serves as a water connection between the port of Barnkrug and the Schwarztonnensander Nebenelbe . In the Ruthenstrom , in the line of the state protection dike built in the 1970s, there is the Ruthenstrom barrage , which is used for flood protection .

natural reserve

The 632 hectare Asselersand has been a nature reserve since August 16, 1988 . The dike that runs across the area divides the area into a front and an inland dike area. The areas of the Vordeichland influenced by floods are extensive marshland with ditches and creeks . In many places, reeds are in front of the grasslands. It is mainly used extensively as pasture and hay meadows . Inland dyke extends agriculturally intensively used grassland consisting of pasture land and orchards .

The area serves as a resting place for numerous migratory bird species on their way to their Scandinavian breeding grounds. It is therefore protected as an internationally important resting area for migratory birds under the EU Birds Directive . The protection purpose mentioned is "the conservation and development of the Asselersand as part of the wetland of international importance ... in its special importance as a resting area for migratory birds and as a breeding area for birds of grassland, water and reed beds". The occurrence of chess flowers and the outstanding importance as a breeding area for waders and water birds should also be emphasized . The nature reserve bears the NSG LÜ 169 label.
