The Barger Heide is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city of Stade in the Stade district .

The nature reserve is around 40  hectares in size. Most of it is part of the FFH area "Schwingetal". In the west it borders on the "Schwingetal" conservation area . The area in the south of Stade south of the districts of Groß Thun and Barge , which has been under nature conservation since July 14, 2017, was previously designated as a protected landscape component. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Stade.

history

During the last ice age, the ice brought stones and sand into the landscape. After the end of the Ice Age, the predominantly westerly wind blew the sand up into dunes . This dune landscape can still be recognized today by the wavy surface with height differences of several meters. The Barger Heide rises from 5 m to 12 m above sea level.

Parts of the Barger Heide were used as arable land in the 19th century . After 1871 it served the Stade garrison as a maneuvering area. After renewed agricultural use after the First World War , the Barger Heider became a parade ground from 1935. In 1938, sand was removed from the adjacent sand pit to fill the air base's runways.

In 1980 the city of Stade acquired the Barger Heide and in 1989 put it under protection by statute as a protected landscape component. Since 2010, large parts of the area at the edge of the rocker tals also part of the EU network of protected areas Natura 2000. .

The area has developed largely undisturbed since it was designated as a protected landscape component. As a result, grassy areas spread out and bushes protruding from the sides increasingly displaced the heather . The city administration of Stader recognized the problem at the beginning of 2000 and started the first measures to save the heathland from encroachment. In order to preserve the heather permanently as a living space, a neighboring farmer was found in 2004 who has grazed the grassy and bushy heather areas with heather sheep ever since .

Since 2012, the Hanseatic City is taking Stade with the support of the district Stade several conservation measures in Barger Heide to allow the heather settle there stronger and can develop. The nutrient-rich soil was removed from the surface using an excavator. The remaining soil becomes poorer in nutrients and the open areas facilitate the natural settlement of common heather. Furthermore, decussing measures are carried out to push back emerging trees. The late blooming bird cherry , which comes from North America and which displaces many native plants, is also removed.

description

The Barger Heide is characterized by dry heather areas with common heather, dry sand turf with silver and ostrich grass as well as poor grassland areas . In places special biotopes such as open sand areas can be found. In addition to the common heather, which settles extensively in the area, heather carnation , hairy and English gorse can be found. In the Barger Heide u. a. 145 kinds of flowering plants as well as 150 kinds of moths are detected.

In the peripheral areas of the area, in addition to conifer stands, partly natural deciduous forests with English oak grow . The deciduous forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

Several paths run through the nature reserve. The area borders on traffic and rural roads and is largely of agricultural land in the west part, also surrounded by wooded areas.
