The nature reserve sand extraction Hammah is a 29 hectare large artificial body of water with the official registration NSG LÜ 085. It is located on the Stader Geest northeast of Hammah in the district of Stade .
The nature reserve was created when, at the beginning of the 1980s, sand was needed to dike a red mud dump in the Bützflether Moor . Conversely fell in landfill large amounts of peat - bran -floor to why the sand in Hammah not only removed, but was replaced by the mixture of peat and clay. The sand extraction area was not completely backfilled. In the remaining anthropogenic depression , an extensive flat body of water formed.
The protection of the area in 1982 was aimed at the undisturbed dynamic development of the artificial lake and its bank areas.
"The protection purpose is the preservation and development of the planned water areas, shallow water areas, islands, reeds and bushes as a diverse habitat for the communities of plants and animals of the still waters and bank zones , in particular as a breeding biotope for ducks and railings and the guest birds gray heron and kingfisher , (as well as ) the permanent securing of a human-made, near-natural part of the landscape as a scientific demonstration and research object, especially for succession studies.
