The Steinbeck is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony city ​​of Stade and the municipality of Deinste in the joint municipality of Fredenbeck in the Stade district .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 261 is about 116  hectares . A large part of it is part of the FFH area "Schwingetal". In the west it borders on the nature reserve “ Deinster Mühlenbach ”, to the northwest and north on the landscape protection areaSchwingetal ”. In addition, it borders in several places on the landscape protection area "Schwinge und Sebentäler" and in the east on the landscape protection area "Rüstjer Forst". The area has been under nature protection since February 2, 2004. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Stade.

The nature reserve is located south of Stade. It protects a section of the Steinbeck with its often damp lowland from the crossing of the Steinbeck through a dirt road between Helmste and Hagen to the confluence of the Steinbeck in the Schwinge and includes part of the lowland of the Schwinge.

In nature conservation, the Steinbeck runs relatively close to nature with flooding underwater vegetation. In Hagen it is dammed up into a mill pond. The Steinbeck runs through alluvial forests with black alder , ash and pedunculate oak and alder forests until it enters the Schwinge valley . In places the forests are interrupted by grasslands . In the lowlands settle u. a. Alternate- and Opposite-leaved golden saxifrage , Avens , Little valerian , Haingilbweiderich , Hain chickweed , marsh marigold and Walzensegge . At the edge of the lowland, the alluvial forests merge into oak and oak-hornbeam forests with pedunculate oak, hornbeam , silver birch and sometimes Scots pine and red beech . In the herb layer settle u. a. Brook clove root , small valerian and chickweed. At the edges of water and forest, there are small areas of moist tall herbaceous vegetation with winged figwort , water deast , true meadowsweet , small valerian and swamp fern . The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

The Steinbeck is habitat u. a. of brown lamprey , river lamprey and brown trout as well as the great pea mussel . The blue-winged demoiselle is also native here. The valley of the Steinbeck is a habitat for otters and polecats . Still live here u. a. Great spotted woodpecker , small woodpecker , kingfisher , oriole , nightingale , nuthatch and gray wagtail .

The valley of the Schwinge is characterized by agriculturally used grassland.

The nature reserve is crossed by Landesstrasse 124 and Kreisstrasse 30 and the Stade – Osterholz-Scharmbeck railway line . In Hagen, other paths cross the area or run through it. The area is also used here for local recreation. The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land or borders on the localities of Hagen and Steinbeck.
