The large pea clam ( Pisidum amnicum in Latin ) is a clam from the genus of pea clams of the family Sphaeriidae .

description

Although the specimens of the species are only 9 mm tall, they are considerably larger than most species of pea clams. It has a concentric, fluted, shiny shell. The shell's umbo is broad but not protruding. The color is gray-white to brown with a greenish tinge.

Way of life

Like all pea clams, they are co-giving births . It is a hermaphrodite that also partially self-fertilizes . The eggs mature in the mother and reach sexual maturity before or shortly after birth . Some of them are already pregnant at birth.

With the help of their mobile feet , they dig into sediments.

Distribution area

The original distribution area is Palearctic . The species was introduced to the northeast of North America ( Great Lakes ).

The pea clam needs clean, calcium-rich water.
