Husmann's fountain snail ( Bythiospeum husmanni ) is a very small freshwater snail from the family of the water cap snail (Hydrobiidae), which has recently only been detected in the river-accompanying groundwater stream of the Ruhr . It can only survive in extremely clean and evenly cool groundwater and thus also represents an indicator of the harmlessness of the groundwater for drinking water supply .

features

The housing is slim-tower-shaped with a truncated apex. In the adult state, it measures 2.6 mm in height and 1 mm in width. It has 5.5 turns that increase fairly uniformly. When fresh it is transparent, the top is smooth. The edge of the mouth is sharp and somewhat enlarged. It is turned over on the spindle side. The housing can be closed with a lid (operculum) that can be pulled deep into the housing. The body is translucent and is divided into a viscera, foot for crawling and stapling, and head with two thin tentacles. At the base of the head, some whitish pigment granules mark the place of the receding eyes. The front part of the head is shaped like a trunk. In the back of the head there are two cartilages of the tongue to which the muscles of the friction tongue (radula) attach. This has seven teeth per transverse row.

Way of life and geographical distribution

Husmann's well snail lives in the groundwater stream of the Ruhr , in clean, cool and evenly tempered groundwater. The animals sit on stones in the gap system of the groundwater flow and pick up organic residues and microorganisms from the stones with the help of the rasp tongue. The species has so far only been proven from a very small area in the Ruhr area (type locality: Schwerte near Dortmund). However, it has recently also been proven from medieval and prehistoric Rhine deposits in the province of Gelderland (Netherlands).

Systematics

The species was first scientifically described in 1963 by Caesar-Rudolf Boettger under the name Paladilhiopsis husmanni . The taxon was later transferred to the genus Bythiospeum . The fountain snails ( Bythiospeum ) form a group of species whose species delimitation is often still completely unclear. Husmann's fountain snail was examined in terms of molecular genetics and compared with species from southern Germany. The independence was clearly demonstrated, at least in relation to the southern German species.

It is named after its discoverer Siegfried Husmann .

Hazard and miscellaneous

Husmann's well snail is mollusk of the year 2009. With this election, the board of trustees wanted to draw attention to the little-known and increasingly polluted habitat of the groundwater of river and gravel gravel and karst cavities. In addition, the need for research on the little-known species of well snail should be pointed out.

According to the "Red List of Inner Mollusks [snails (Gastropoda) and mussels (Bivalvia)] in Germany", Husmann's well snail is endangered.
