The petite pan snail ( Anisus vorticulus ) is a small water lung snail (Basommatophora) from the family of pan snails (Planorbidae). In 2011, she was voted Mollusk of the Year in Germany.

features

The case is only 0.7 to 0.8 mm high and up to 5 mm in diameter. It has 5 to 5.5 whorls, which are convex on the top and bottom. A blunt edge is formed in the middle of the last passage. The top of the case is slightly dented, the bottom is almost flat. The animals are about 1 year old.

Habitat and Distribution

The petite cuspidor snail lives in clear, stagnant waters on plants, preferably in small ponds that are covered with duckweed ( Lemna ). It occurs from Western to Eastern Europe. It is missing in Scandinavia.

Similar species

The sharp cuspidor snail ( Anisus vortex ) is slightly larger and has a sharper keel.

Danger

The petite cupped snail ( Anisus vorticulus ) is threatened with extinction in Germany and Switzerland. In Austria it is classified as critically endangered.

Systematics

The delicate pan snail is also included in the subgenus Anisus (Disculifer) CR Boettger, 1944, together with the sharp pan snail .
