The nature reserve includes the Ostmoor, the Harzmoor and the Wulmstorfer Moor, the Rübker Bruch and the green spaces in between . They are located in the transition area between the marshland and the Geest and form extensive low and high moors . The nature reserve has acquired particular importance because it is the largest breeding area of the endangered corncrake in Lower Saxony.

Typical of the area is the small-scale mosaic of meadows , mowing pastures , pastures and fallow land with partially high ground water level , which is crossed by a close-meshed grave system. Birch and quarry forests , hedges , bushes and individual trees complete the picture. Half of the land in the south and west is intensively cultivated as grassland and arable land. The near-natural areas are mainly to be found in the north and east. The nature reserve bears the label NSG LÜ 271. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Harburg and Stade.
