The heather moor near Ottermoor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony community of Otter in the Tostedt municipality in the Harburg district .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 044 is around 121 hectares . A large part of it is part of the FFH area "Wümmeniederung". In the west and south it borders on the nature reserve " Obere Wümmeniederung ". The nature reserve initially comprised an area of around 21 hectares of the Heidemoor, which was placed under nature protection on December 16, 1978. As of December 1, 2018, it was expanded to its current size of around 121 hectares, including the areas of the FFH area "Wümmeniederung" that had previously surrounded the nature reserve. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Harburg.
The protected area is located approximately between Tostedt and Schneverdingen in the Wümme lowland north of Wintermoor , a part of Schneverdingen. It puts a dune area on the southern edge of the Todtshorn moraine ridge under protection. In the central area, the blow-out hollows of the dunes are muddy. Birch and pine bog forests grow here with peat moss , whistle grass and gale bushes . On treeless bog areas settle peat moss, white beak-sedge , Rundblättriger and sundew , heathland with bells , brooms and rosemary , bog lily , gentian , Cranberry and Crowberry .
On the higher-lying, dry sites of the moraine that adjoins to the north , pine and oak forests grow thick, in which sandy heather and common heather are embedded. Juniper and gorse settle here and there. Open areas are occupied by dry sand lawns with silver grass and ostrich grasses. A special feature is an occurrence of the branchy grass lily . The forests in the nature reserve are predominantly rich in old and dead wood .
In places there are still waters with well-developed aquatic and silting vegetation. Spawnweed and frog-bite communities settle here. One of the still waters in the north of the nature reserve emerged from a former sand extraction point .
The Fuhlbach rises in the area and flows into the Wümme after a few kilometers. It is partly accompanied by alder and ash forests with black alder and common ash . In the herbaceous layer settle among other forest Bingelkraut , enchanter's nightshade and Small valerian .
Agricultural areas on the edge are included in the nature reserve . These are partly used as grassland , partly as arable land. Further agricultural areas and forests border the nature reserve to the north, and mainly agricultural areas to the east.
The nature reserve, shaped by a biotope mosaic, is the habitat of a species-rich fauna. The moors and moored areas are, among other things, a habitat for cranes and woodcock , reptiles such as wood lizards and adder, and amphibians such as the moor frog, as well as the dragonfly species peat damsel , raised moor damsel and little moss damsel . The meadows accommodate z. B. Meadow pipit and yellow wagtail , the grasshopper species such as the large hay horse and short-winged swordfish as well as various butterflies and other insects . Dry lawns and heather provide a suitable habitat for sand lizards and smooth snakes , among others . The forests host z. B. Green and small woodpecker as well as fringed bat and little noctule bat .
The running waters are habitat for bullheads , brook lamprey , kingfisher and otters and feeding habitat for pond bats .
