The Untere Seeveniederung is a nature reserve east of Maschen in the Harburg district and is a typical part of the Elbmarschen . It is traversed by the Ashauser Mühlenbach and the Seeve , which flow into the Elbe after their union through the Seeves barrier . The Lower Seeveniederung was designated as a nature reserve in 1993.
General
The Untere Seeveniederung nature reserve currently covers around 500 hectares . When it was registered as a fauna and flora habitat and an EU bird sanctuary , it became part of the European Natura 2000 system of protected areas . The area borders on the “ Seeve ” nature reserve to the west .
Wetland
Until the barrage was built, the tides of the Elbe could regularly flood the flat grassland with a tidal range of around 2.8 m. High groundwater levels and regular floods force has always been a relatively extensive management of pastures and hay meadows wet cattle and form a favorable condition for the development of diverse and species-rich wet grassland -Pflanzengesellschaften, reedbeds , Seggenrieder and Hochstaudenfluren . The area is characterized by its extensive use of grassland and two large lakes, the Junkernfeldsee and the Steller See. Due to the high groundwater levels, larger wet meadow areas have developed with locations of the endangered chess flower.
Chess flower
The Junkernfeld in the lower Seeveniederung houses probably the largest occurrence of checkerboard flowers in Germany on an area of 130 ha . It is almost entirely owned by the State of Lower Saxony and is administered by the Domain Office in Stade. The chessboard flower bloom at the end of April / beginning of May attracts thousands of nature lovers every year. In the rest of the time, the area is also an important local recreation area for nature lovers.
Grasslands
An area of 14 hectares lay fallow for decades as a storage area for unusable sands and rocks that arose during the construction of the Maschen marshalling yard . Due to the nutrient-poor site conditions and the exposed, sunny-dry location, an important habitat developed here for numerous endangered animal and plant species that are more likely to be found in the steppe than in the marshland. Lean lawns , thorn bushes and open sand areas create ideal habitats for light and warmth-loving insects and birds, many of which are endangered species. A grazing project ("Seevengeti") aims to preserve this grassland community.
Others
An artificial kingfisher nest wall was set up on the west bank of the Steller See , which is well received by the animals. In the south of the nature reserve there is a horse head pump , an industrial monument from the time of oil production.
