The Seeves barrier is located at the confluence of the Seeve with the Elbe . It is part of a flood protection concept to that of the tides influenced Unterelbe from the barrage Geesthacht to the mouth of the river into the North Sea, the result of the severe storm surge in February 1962 has been developed.

The barrage built in 1965 and 1966 protects the lake lowlands from flooding. The construction costs amounted to the equivalent of around 0.8 million euros.

The structure is 43.60 m wide and 19.90 m deep. It has swing gates as a sluice , but also storm surge-proof lifting gates. That is why it is officially called the “Barrage and Siel”. In 2004 the system was automated. It is always closed when the water level of the Elbe rises above the Seeve. The sluice opens again automatically as soon as the water level of the Elbe falls below that of the Seeve again.

The barrage is operated by the Lüneburg site of the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN).
