The nature reserve is located southeast of Winsen (Luhe). In the north the nature reserve borders on the A 39 , in the northeast on the Hanover – Hamburg railway line and in the south on the Hausbach. A moat runs around the lake.

The lake was created between 1983 and 1989 through excavation for the construction of the A 250 , which is now the northern section of the A 39. The resulting pit then filled with groundwater.

The beautiful bays along the lake is reed zones, shrubs, grasslands and grassland surrounded areas. There are also two shallow ponds between the lake and the motorway.

The grassland areas in the south of the reserve are extensively farmed, while over 12 hectares of grassland areas in the north and west since 2005, as grazing areas for Belted Galloway serve, which should keep the surfaces gehölzarm.

In the west of the nature reserve there is a covered lookout point for nature observation.
