The Upper Wümmeniederung is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony communities of Königsmoor , Otter , Welle , Tostedt and Wistedt in the Tostedt district in the Harburg district and in the town of Schneverdingen in the Heidekreis district .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 146 is about 1,607  hectares . Of this, around 1,417 hectares are in the Harburg district and around 190 hectares in the Heidekreis district. The nature reserve is almost entirely part of the FFH area "Wümmeniederung". To the west it borders on the nature reserves " Ekelmoor " and " Wümmeniederung mit Rodau, Wiedau and Trochelbach ", to the east on the nature reserve " Heidemoor bei Ottermoor ". An approximately 1,415 hectare part of the nature reserve was placed under nature protection on November 2, 1986. A new nature conservation ordinance was passed on March 28, 2019. The area was expanded to its present size. The new nature conservation ordinance came into force on May 1, 2019. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Harburg and Heidekreis.

The nature reserve extends south of Tostedt along the Wümmeniederung . With parts of the Wümmeniederung and adjacent geest areas, it comprises a mosaic of different biotope types. In the lowland are areas of wet meadows , reedbeds and Sedge, tall herb corridors with meadowsweet , loosestrife , Eupatorium , purple loosestrife , breakage and alluvial forests with alder and ash to find as the dominant tree species. In the herb layer, among other things, forest ragweed , witch's herb , changeable milkweed , angle sedge , swamp pippau and small valerian settle .

In the east of the area there is an upland moor area called the Great Peat Bog . Various peat mosses , round-leaved and medium-sized sundew , narrow-leaved cottongrass , beaked sedge and nail bush settle here . Moist heather and bog heather are formed by bell heather and common heather , cranberry , bog lily and lung gentian. A large part of the bog is of peatland forests of birch and pine trees taken.

On the higher edge areas and dunes there are sometimes pine, oak and beech forests . Here z. B. shadow flowers , wood sorrel , seven star and blueberry . In addition, here are sandy heaths , Sandmager- and Nardus grasslands , among others bristle grass , saving Riger rush , Wood-rush Crowded, Hirsesegge and thread rush before.

The Wümme and its tributaries can - partly after renaturation and restructuring measures - flow in the nature reserve as naturally as possible. They have flooding aquatic vegetation, including water stars. The Wümme is often accompanied by trees, which are partly followed by forests.

Still waters are home to pondweed and frog-bite communities.

Large parts of the nature reserve are used for agriculture and forestry as grassland , arable land and commercial forest. In between there are numerous fallow areas . The grassland areas around the large peat bog are often damp. They are used extensively as species-rich grasslands. The bog areas, which had been drained and changed by peat cutting, were rewetted and partly freed of tree vegetation by means of decussing measures .

The nature reserve is the habitat of various fish and round mouths , bats , birds , reptiles and amphibians as well as insects . Bullhead , river perch , brown trout , gudgeon , wolffish , mud whip , sea ​​lamprey , river lamprey and brook lamprey are native to the Wümme . The Wümme and its tributaries offer a suitable habitat for the kingfisher , the water bat and pond bat and the dragonfly species green mermaid , common wedge damsel , blue-winged demoiselle and banded demoiselle . The otter is also native to the area.

The forests in the nature reserve have a high proportion of old and dead wood . They are different among other habitat bats as greater mouse-eared , Noctule , lesser noctule and Natterer's bat and birds such as the black woodpecker , green woodpecker , lesser spotted woodpecker , stock dove and Kleiber . Also, Red Kite and Black Stork are native here in the floodplain forests and the woodcock .

The large peat bog is home to other moor frogs , forest lizards , adder , black darter , peat mosaic maiden , great moss maid and little moss maid . The crane is also native here.

The areas used as hay meadows are home to various meadow birds such as curlew , lapwing , corncrake , skylark , yellow wagtail , meadow pipit and whinchat . Various species of locusts such as the large hay horse and short-winged sword insect as well as various butterflies and other insects, invertebrates and small mammals are also native here.
