The Wietzendorfer Moor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Wietzendorf in the Heidekreis district .

description

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 245 is 210  hectares in size. In the south it borders directly on the nature reserve " Großes Moor bei Becklingen ". The area has been a nature reserve since July 16, 1998. The district of Heidekreis is responsible as the lower nature conservation authority.

The Wietzendorfer Moor is a part of the former Great Moores, a bog area between Wietzendorf and mountains . The nature reserve, which consists of six sub-areas, is located southwest of Wietzendorf between the Celle – Soltau railway line (which partially delimits the nature reserve) and the B 3 .

The nature reserve is primarily characterized by bog and quarry forest on the largely drained and partially dismantled bog. Existing peat bites were decussed and rewetted . Typical upland vegetation such as cotton grass , peat moss and swinging lawns as well as bell heather communities regenerate here .

In the larger, contiguous and adjacent to Wietzendorf area in the northeast of the reserve and are grassland areas and individual spruce forste to find. A coherent grassland complex is formed by the "Radewiesen". The area extends over 55 hectares within the nature reserve and has been cultivated at least since the end of the 18th century. The wet meadows are used extensively today. They provide a habitat for a variety of plants and animals, some of which are rare and particularly worthy of protection, including z. B. meadow birds such as lapwing , curlew and common snipe as well as numerous other bird species. The wet meadows are home to over 100 species of plants.

In the southernmost part of the nature reserve there are polders that were formerly laid out as sewage and settling ponds for a potato starch factory in the Wietzendorf district of Klein America .

A wide sandy path runs through the entire moorland, which is designated as a cycle path and on which a moor and wet meadow nature trail has been set up. Part of the nature trail is designed as a circular route. The path through the moor is also a section of the " Jacobusweg Lüneburg Heath".

The individual sub-areas of the nature reserve are predominantly surrounded by intensively used agricultural areas . The Wietzendorfer Moor is drained via ditches to the Wietze , a tributary of the Örtze , and to the Suhrbach, which flows into the Wietze at Wietzendorf.

Polders

In 1969/70 the Wietzendorf starch factory, which is owned by the Emsland Group today, was built to produce natural potato starch . Special polders were created that absorbed the surface water of the factory premises and initially also the water that accumulated when the potatoes were washed. In 1996 the starch factory started its own sewage treatment plant. Since then, only surface water has been discharged here. The five large and four small polders are also fed by rainwater. They are connected to one another by overflows. The polders developed into a regionally significant breeding , resting and wintering area for various bird species, to which the dyke vegetation on the polders also contributed.

Breeding birds

The polders are breeding grounds for a species-rich avifauna . So here come z. B. teal , tufted duck , golden bell , water rail , moorhen , coot , reed warbler , reed warbler , reed bunting , yellow mockers , blackcap , blackcap , puffy tit and fitis .

Guest birds

The area is also important for migrants and food visitors. So here are u. a. Gadwall , Wigeon , Pintail , Garganey , Shoveler , Pochard , lapwings, snipe, green sandpiper , wood pigeon , jays , swifts , sand martin , Barn Swallow , Fieldfare , Redwing , Chiffchaff , Garden Warbler , Little Ringed Plover , wren , sparrow hawks and Hobby encountered. Some species are on the Red List of Threatened Species .
