The Upper Fintautal is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Schneverdingen in the Heidekreis district and in the Fintel municipality in the Fintel municipality in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 018 is 416 hectares in size. Of this, 346.3 hectares are in the Heidekreis district and 69.7 hectares in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.
The nature reserve is located south of the Schneverding districts of Wesseloh and Wintermoor, and east of Fintel in the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park . It protects the partly still naturally meandering Fintau from its source streams to Fintel as well as the lowland surrounding the river, including the mill pond in Eggersmühlen and several fish ponds. The mill pond is a reservoir near Eggersmühlen. The Fintau is dammed here by a dam so that a water mill can be operated. The mill worked until around 1950.
In the Fintau lowlands you can find alder, birch and pine quarries as well as heather moors and forests . Particularly in the edge areas of the nature reserve, there are agricultural areas in the form of grassland and arable land in some places .
The area has been a nature reserve since December 16, 1996. The “Fintautal” nature reserve, which was designated on September 16, 1971, is incorporated into it. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Heidekreis and Rotenburg (Wümme).
