The Fintau is an 18.3 kilometer long left tributary of the Wümme in Lower Saxony , Germany. The river rises southeast of Eggersmühlen near Wesseloh in the Heidekreis district and flows primarily in a north-west direction, initially through natural forest, field and meadow areas in the Upper Fintautal nature reserve in the joint municipality of Fintel . It crosses the municipality of Vahlde and flows northwest of Lauenbrück into the Wümme, which is hardly the same here.

Larger tributaries of the Fintau are Ruschwede, Benkeloher Graben, Florgraben, Wesseloher Graben and Osterweder Bach.

The Fintau has been the habitat of sea trout and salmon again for several years . The fishing clubs Lauenbrück and Fintel have been running a resettlement project for these large salmonids here since 1982 .

Finishing and dismantling measures

Up until the 1950s, the areas on the lower course of the Fintau between Vahlde and Lauenbrück were characterized by waterlogging and frequent flooding. Accordingly, the vegetation was limited to sour grasses. In order to increase agricultural yields by preventing harvest losses due to flooding, the Fintau was straightened in this area from 1955 to 1956. The floor width was increased from 3 to 4 to 5.30 m and the floor slope was reduced from 0.92 to 0.4%. The construction work reduced the swampy character of the area, and meadows and fields became more usable for agriculture. In the course of the measures, oxbow lakes of the river were cut off. One of these oxbow lakes is 200 m long and was reactivated in 2007-2008 as part of the Wümme model region project for the purpose of species protection. The costs amounted to € 31,250, of which the state of Lower Saxony took over 80%.

Fintau weir

Due to major floods in 2002 and 2008, a 700 m long dam with a flood barrier was built in front of the village of Lauenbrück in 2009/2010 to protect against flooding.
