About this picture

Fintel is a municipality in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony .

geography

The area around Fintel is mainly used for agriculture (increasingly for energy crops such as maize). The landscape is only sparsely forested on the edges of the municipality. Small patches of forest can be found in the southwest, the largest is in the east, and there are more in the north. From the south the Ruschwede flows through Fintel in a north-west direction . The Fintau flows further north from east to west . Part of this is under nature protection: 69.7 of the 416 hectares of the Upper Fintautal nature reserve are in the municipality, the rest in the Heidekreis. Nearby is the 3.6 hectare nature reserve Finteler Wacholderlandschaft to the north .

The terrain is level except for three elevations. They are on the outskirts of the village and are in the southwest of the Krähenberg, in the northeast of the Osterberg and another in the east.

Neighboring communities

The municipality of Fintel is surrounded by the following municipalities - starting in the north and moving clockwise:

history

Fintel was first mentioned in a document in 1105, at that time under the name Wintla , which probably means the present day Fintel. Later, the names Wintlo and Vintlo are often used for the place. The name means something like swampy terrain .

Since 1970 Fintel has been part of the Fintel community , which has its administrative headquarters in Lauenbrück . Excavations in the Feldmark show that the area around Fintel was around 2000 BC. Is inhabited. Old stone axes, battle axes, arrowheads, stone daggers and the like have been uncovered during excavations.

Presumably at the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century, the Verden bishop founded and consecrated an Antonius chapel in Fintel. The alms collector of the Antonite Order , who had been sent from his mother house in Grünberg , also stopped in Fintel on his collecting tour. He achieved, probably based on a papal privilege, according to which Anthony chapels and altars were only allowed to be erected by the order, that the Bishop of Verden, John III. von Asel (1426–1470), who was no longer able to freely dispose of the donations made in the chapel over the course of a year, but had to give half of them to him, the messenger. The bishop for his part received half of the proceeds from the collection, which the Antonite was allowed to do once a year in the chapel. The two signed a treaty on this in 1443. This is the only document handed down for Fintel's medieval church history.

Probably when the water of a seemingly miraculous spring lured the sick to a pilgrimage to Fintel, at the end of the 15th century the Antonites took over the nursing of the sick and began to set up a settlement. However, when their mother house in Grünberg was dissolved during the Reformation in 1527, they gave up their plan and left Fintel. The buildings they had already built were demolished in 1548 by the aristocratic lord Anton von Weye and the material was removed. The so-called monastery church, however, continued to exist until it was probably a victim of the Thirty Years' War in the 20s or 30s of the 17th century . Shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War, a thatched half-timbered church was built in 1648. After the current one, built from 1882 to 1884, was completed, the half-timbered church was demolished. Thus, the St. Antonius Church could look back on its 100th anniversary in 1984.

In the past, the Feldmark consisted of very little cultivated areas and large heather and moor areas. As a result, large herds of heather sheep were always kept here. According to records and stories, there were 10 to 15 herds of 200 sheep here about 100 to 150 years ago. Beekeeping also had a stronghold here. In 1885 Germany's first beekeeping school was established in Fintel.

The well-known Low German poet Friedrich Freudenthal, b. on May 9, 1849 in Fallingbostel , lived in Fintel from the age of three. Many true stories from his pen tell from this time. The house of the poet is still in a well-renovated state in half-timbered construction and thatched in the village. The primary school and a street are named after him and a memorial was erected in a wood in his honor in 1929. Both structures are a popular destination for many visitors to the place.

The primary and secondary school was inaugurated in December 1963. The school has been running as a primary school since 2001 after the new secondary and secondary school in Lauenbrück was completed. In the years that followed, the gym was built next to it and an athletics facility was created on the school grounds. In addition, there is a sports facility with two sports fields. A heated outdoor pool with a swimming channel has existed since 1974. This facility is popular with the citizens of Fintel and the neighboring communities as well as holiday guests. A rain retention basin, the Fleetsee, was built in 1986 on a 20,000 m² site.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Fintel
Blazon : “Quartered in silver (white) and red, field 1 an obliquely left sinking, red bird of prey with outstretched wings in outline; Field 2 a slanting silver (white) oak leaf; Field 3 and 4 in mixed up colors, two diagonally crossed wind boards with horses' heads turned inwards; a black nailed cross in the center. "
Reasons for the coat of arms: The coat of arms in the Lower Saxony colors of red and silver is reminiscent of nature with the bird of prey and the oak leaf. Finteler juniper landscape and parts of the nature reserve Upper Fintautal are in the municipality. The windboards with the horse heads are typical gable decorations of the hall houses in Fintel . The nail-pointed cross symbolizes belonging to the diocese of Verden .

Buildings

St. Anthony Church

The Finteler St. Antonius Church is a neo-Gothic single - nave chapel built from 1882 to 1884 by the architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase of the Hanover Building School. Its name goes back to the Antonius Brotherhood, which was active in the village in the Middle Ages and cared for the poor and sick. The building is made of brick and has a four-story tower. The apse is polygonal in shape and the interior of the hall is covered with wood. The altar is a winged altar and was put together in its current form in 1971. It contains carved wooden figures from the previous churches in Fintel.

A handicraft market is held regularly on the grounds of the Heimathaus. The Finteler poultry market, which takes place several times a year, is also known in the region.

traffic

Traffic routes

The K211, K212 and K221 run through Fintel. In the east, the municipality is also cut by the K31, to which, however, only farm roads connect in the municipality, which is why it has no traffic significance for Fintel. In the north, the K221 is followed by the K222 leading to Lauenbrück.

Local public transport

The nearest train stations are in Lauenbrück (9 km, Hamburg – Bremen line) and Schneverdingen (12 km, Heidebahn). There are also 9 bus stops in the municipality, which are served by various regional bus routes. There are bus connections to Lauenbrück, Schneverdingen, Tostedt, Rotenburg and Scheeßel via these. The connections to Tostedt and Lauenbrück have only existed since 2013 and 2014, before there was no connection between Fintels and local train stations. In 2013, the Samtgemeinderat decided to set up a bus line to Tostedt for an initial two years to better connect the town to rail traffic, especially for commuters to Hamburg. In March 2014, the new HVV line 4870 to Tostedt went into operation and for the first time provides a regular bus connection to a train station. The buses run in the mornings and late afternoons until evenings due to their focus on commuters. With the 2014 timetable change, line 873 was added from Lauenbrück via Fintel to Großenwede (Heidekreis).
