JavaStation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The JavaStation is a network computer (NC) manufactured by Sun Microsystems between 1996 and 2000 .

The hardware is based on the design of the Sun SPARCstation , a very successful computer architecture of UNIX workstations from the 1980s. As is typical for NCs, there are no computer components such as floppy disks, hard disk drives and CD-ROM drives. Mainly standard PC components are used: connections for keyboard and mouse (PS / 2), connection for monitor with VGA, use of SIMM / DIMM RAM.

As the operating system, Sun supplied its own JavaOS , which essentially provides the virtual machine (VM) for Sun's Java . Java programs can run on top of this, for example the HotJava browser. However, Linux can also be used on the JavaStation.
