SPARCstation
SPARCstation , SPARCserver and SPARCcenter were names for a series of workstations and servers produced by Sun Microsystems since 1989 , which were based on the SPARC architecture. They are the successors to the Sun 4 series.
The SPARCserver models corresponded exactly to the SPARCstations with the same model name, but did not have a graphics card and monitor . Until the 600MP series was released, the model designation began with 4 / (for Sun-4); then they started south .
The first model in the SPARCstation series was the SPARCstation 1 ( Sun 4/60 ) from 1989. This series introduced the Sun-4c architecture, a variant of the earlier Sun-4 architecture. The SPARCstation series was very successful internationally, partly because Motorola was slow to develop more modern processors. In 1995 the SPARCstation series was replaced by the Sun Ultra series; the last model was the SPARCstation 20.
In contrast to earlier models from Sun and other computer manufacturers, most of the desktop versions of the SPARCstation and SPARCserver models were delivered in " pizza box " or "lunch box" cases.
The SPARCserver models, the names of which ended with “30” or “70”, were housed in upright desktop housings with five or twelve VMEbus slots. The SPARCcenter 2000 and devices with the designation “90”, however, had rack housings .
Later versions of the SPARCstation series, such as models 10 and 20, could also be configured as a multiprocessor system thanks to their MBus systems .
