Breddorf is a municipality with 1011 inhabitants in the Lower Saxon municipality of Tarmstedt in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district . In addition to the main town of Breddorf, the towns of Hanstedt , Breddorfermoor and Ehebrock also belong to the municipality.

Breddorf was first mentioned in a document in 1236.

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, the neighboring community of Hanstedt was incorporated.

Origin of the place name

Breddorf was first mentioned in 1236, was known from 1237 to 1246 Breddtorpe and around 1352 in Brettorpe. The name comes from the Low German "brēd" for broad. In connection with “dorp” for village, one can conclude that the place name apparently refers to the location or shape of the settlement, i.e. broad village.

Sports

Breddorf shares a sports club with Hepstedt (SV Eintracht Hepstedt / Breddorf). Sports: running, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, gymnastics and much more. The soccer division was reorganized in 2012.

The soccer club FC Ummel has existed for this purpose since 2012. It was created through the merger of the men's and youth football departments of the two clubs TSV Timke and SV Eintracht Hepstedt / Breddorf.

The council of the municipality of Breddorf consists of eleven council women and councilors. Personalities

The writer Walter Kempowski (1929–2007) lived in Breddorf from 1960 to 1965, where he taught together with his wife Hildegard as a teacher at the local elementary school.

The entrepreneur and honorary consul general Andreas Maske (* 1959) grew up in Breddorf in the entrepreneurial household of his parents. His father Eckard Maske was the founder and former managing director of the Maske group of companies.
