history

middle Ages

Visselhövede has developed in a high trough around the sources of the Vissel river. At this point there was a pre-Christian shrine. The first known documentary mention of the place falls on the year 1258. A document from 1288 proves the transfer of the Gografschaft Visselhövede to the Verden bishop Konrad .

In 1432 the parish of Visselhövede was badly damaged in fighting and the core town burned down. The Verden bishop Johann then had the newly built place slightly fortified with ramparts and moats and closed with two gates (1450). This gave the place the status of a patch .

Early modern age

In 1567 the Reformation was introduced. After a Catholic interlude through the imperial edict of restitution between 1629 and 1631, Visselhövede became Protestant. In 1645 the place with the Duchy of Verden fell to Sweden . Visselhövede became Danish in 1712 and finally in 1719 by the Hanoverian Elector Georg Ludwig , together with the Duchy of Verden. Between 1805 and 1813, Visselhövede belonged to France for most of the time due to the conquests of Napoleon . The liberation from French rule took place on October 12, 1813 by Russian-Prussian troops. Then Visselhövede belonged to the Kingdom of Hanover . From 1866 followed 80 years of membership in Prussia , which was dissolved by the victorious powers in 1946 .

19th and 20th centuries

In 1874, Visselhövede received a railway connection through the construction of the American line, which was supplemented in 1890 by a line via Walsrode to Hanover ( see Heidebahn ; dismantled in 1986) and in 1906 by the Bremervörde – Walsrode railway to Rotenburg (Wümme) (dismantled between 1974 and 1982) . In 1938 Visselhövede received city status.

Incorporations

On the occasion of the regional reform, the communities Bleckwedel, Buchholz, Dreeßel, Drögenbostel, Hiddingen, Jeddingen, Kettenburg (previously in the Fallingbostel district ), Lüdingen, Nindorf, Ottingen, Rosebruch, Schwitschen, Wehnsen and Wittorf were incorporated on March 1, 1974 .

Culture and sights

St. Johannis in Visselhövede

Sights include the old town with the market square and alleys, the Vissel spring and the town hall. The St. Johannis Church was built in 1358 as a Gothic stone building, to which the bell tower was added in 1799. The restored, old town house in Burgstrasse is now the seat of the Visselhövede cultural and local society . In 2006 the property was expanded into the Visselhof with a historic Heidespeicher . As part of the urban redevelopment, the former Sonnentau honey and wax goods factory with the 27 m high water tower was partially reconstructed. Galleries for contemporary art and studios are located in the water tower and the former office building. As in the Heimathaus, there has also been a branch office of the registry office in the former water tower since 2007. Those willing to marry can marry there.

In Königshof, the dog from the fairy tale " The Bremen Town Musicians " is said to have joined the donkey. A long-distance cycle path, which connects all four places where the four animals are said to have lived, and which leads through Visselhövede, the “Town Musicians Path”, was inaugurated in 2008.

After 1820, the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauß used the summit of the Elmhorstberg as a triangulation point to survey the Kingdom of Hanover (on behalf of King George IV ) . Part of the triangular network with the Elmhorstberg was shown on the back of the “10 DM” banknote of the fourth series of the Deutsche Mark ( see picture ).

Economy and Infrastructure

In the past there were companies in match manufacture, candy production and vehicle construction. Today the most important company is active in the mineral oil wholesale business.

Visselhövede was a Bundeswehr location until the beginning of 2016 . The command support battalion 285 was stationed in the Lehnsheide barracks ( called Mölders barracks until January 2005 ). As part of the Bundeswehr reform (11/2011), the location was supposed to be closed in 2015 and was therefore bought by the city of Visselhövede after it had already found a subsequent user. In the short term, however, it became necessary to temporarily use the facilities as emergency accommodation for refugees .

The organic farming associations Bioland Niedersachsen / Bremen , Naturland and the Competence Center Ökolandbau Niedersachsen GmbH are based in Visselhövede. They employ a total of around 30 people there.

On the outskirts of Visselhövede, the NDR operates the Visselhövede transmitter . Visselhövede owns branches of Volksbank Lüneburger Heide eG and Sparkasse Rotenburg-Bremervörde .

Social facilities

Visselhövede is the location of a large nursing home. Heimstätte Jeddingen , an institution for mentally handicapped adults, is located in the neighboring town of Jeddingen . The closest hospitals are the Agaplesion Diakonieklinikum Rotenburg , the Heidekreis-Klinikum in Walsrode and the Aller-Weser-Klinik in Verden. In the emergency medical service, Visselhövede is assigned to the Walsrode district. Visselhövede is the location of an ambulance station in the Rotenburg district, manned by the German Red Cross and has a local association of Johanniter Unfallhilfe e. V., who provide voluntary rescue personnel and offer training. The emergency medical service is supervised by the on-call practice in the Walsrode hospital.

Visselhövede has been a member of the Bremen / Lower Saxony transport association (VBN) since August 2018 . For journeys with the railway company erixx on the American line, the VBN tariff applies in the direction of Langwedel and further in the direction of Bremen or Verden, while the state- wide Lower Saxony tariff remains unchanged in the direction of Soltau , Uelzen and Hanover .

bus

City traffic is essentially carried by a citizen bus system. This also creates a connection to Verden via the Kirchlinteln citizen bus.

The regional bus line 880 of Weser-Ems-Bus GmbH runs to the district town of Rotenburg with 8 daily trips on school days between 5:35 a.m. and 5:25 p.m., as well as 2 trips on Saturdays (as of 2018). The new line 588 of the Haller Busbetrieb has been providing a fast direct connection to Walsrode four times a day since August 2018, there with a connection to the Heidebahn from and to Hanover.

The Rotenburg district has been a member of the North East Lower Saxony Transport Association (VNN) since 1995 . In bus traffic within the district, the ROW tariff applies to all connections that are outside the Bremen / Lower Saxony transport association. In addition to its own regional tariff, the VNN offers a transitional tariff to HVV on line 880 , for example in the direction of Hamburg.

military

From 1972 to March 1992 the Federal Air Force operated a Control and Reporting Center nearby (outskirts of Drögenbostel) . The Air Force Unit Detached Technical Train 243 is stationed on Elmhorstberg . In 2013/14, their high-performance fixed radar system ( MPR ) for military airspace surveillance was replaced by the modern phased array radar system of the Ground Master 406F type . In addition, a relay station for military radio is operated in the vicinity (outskirts of Hiddingen).
