history

The first documentary mention dates on March 16, 1275. Here the knight Johann Clüver confesses that he sold the tithe in Drögenbostel to the priest Heinrich, vicar at the St. Catherine's Altar in Verden Cathedral. The actual emergence of the Drögenbostel settlement is likely to date back further. The nearby burial mounds from the Bronze Age, as well as the Höllenberg (93.4 m above sea level), which served the Teutons as a place of worship, provide information.

The following can be said about the origin of the place name: The places that have a “Borstel” or “Bostel” (Low German: “Bossel”) in their name usually have one thing in common: Originally, these places were individual courtyards around which localities later formed. Often these farms were noble seats with a castle complex and state or manorial forest. Mostly they were on high ground near fish-rich waters. All “Borstels” are based on the Old High German word “Bur”, which can be translated as “settlement”. The word "drög" comes from Low German and can be translated as "dry". In summary, "dry settlement" can be translated, which is probably an indication of the very dry arable land near the Höllenberg (18-22 soil points).

Originally, Drögenbostel was a manor that had a "castle". This castle was on the road from Visselhövede on the left at the entrance to the village. The associated manor was later divided into three full courtyards. Two of these full courtyards then again turned into four half courtyards, so that the current number of one full courtyard and four half courtyards was created, after a half courtyard in the middle of the 19th century was effectively a quarter courtyard due to the sale of two cultivation sites.

In 1784 the community received the approval to set up its own school. This existed until 1962. The school-age children go to school today in Visselhövede and Rotenburg (Wümme).

The club system that emerged at the end of the 19th century was and is an integral part of village life here too. A fire brigade was formed before 1880 and a singing and cycling club was founded around 1900. From 1924 the rifle club was added, which with the organization of the rifle and harvest festival always formed the center of the village togetherness. Singing and cycling clubs were dissolved in the course of the First World War . A new foundation did not come about. In 1974, the Drögenbostel and Hiddingen volunteer fire brigades merged. The current joint fire brigade provides fire protection and general help.

At the end of the 19th century, the village of Drögenbostel, which was an independent municipality, had 100 inhabitants. Since the local government reform , which came into force on 1 March 1974, the previously independent municipality Drögenbostel is one of 15 villages in the town of Visselhövede.
