history

In 1345, Kettenburg was built as a moated castle . It became the ancestral seat of the von der Kettenburg family . The encounter between Baron Kuno von der Kettenburg and Social Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler in Mainz in 1852 led to the conversion of the baron and his family to the Catholic faith. Kettenburg had its own pastor until 1867; this also administered the enclave of Soltau .

The castle with castle chapel in Kettenburg was built from 1875 to 1878. The castle chapel was named "Herz-Jesu-Kettenburg". In 1941 Clemens Echelmeyer , a pastor from Münster , was exiled by the National Socialists to Visselhövede . Here he held masses in the manor chapel in Kettenburg until 1949 and gathered the Catholic community around him in difficult times.

In 1960 the castle in Kettenburg was so dilapidated that it had to be demolished. In 1974 the heiress of the Kettenburg, Marina Countess Droste zu Vischering von Nesselrode-Reichenstein, born Freiin von der Kettenburg , died at Herrnstein Castle . In 1987 her husband, the Count, also died there.

Since the regional reform , which came into force on March 1, 1974, the previously independent municipality of Kettenburg, which until then belonged politically to the Fallingbostel district , has been one of 15 localities in the city of Visselhövede.
