Clemens Echelmeyer

Clemens Echelmeyer (born April 9, 1895 in Riesenbeck ; † January 19, 1968 ) was a German clergyman and from 1941 to 1968 first cathedral capitular and later cathedral provost of the diocese of Münster .

Life

On April 9, 1895, Clemens Echelmeyer was born as the fifth of the nine children of Franz Xaver Echelmeyer and Maria geb. Heemann was born. First he attended elementary school in Riesenbeck, but later received private lessons at the Surenburg together with Max Heereman von Zuydtwyck .

First he studied in Münster, but soon moved to Trier to enroll in the seminary and study theology. From 1917 he fought as a soldier in the First World War. After continuing his studies in Münster, he was ordained a priest on December 17, 1921 in the cathedral . At his home town of Primiz he received a golden goblet as a gift from the Heereman family . He was initially a chaplain in Meiderich and Bocholt before he worked at a boarding school for students with learning difficulties from 1929 to 1934.

From 1934 he was diocesan president of the Kolping family in Münster, where he repeatedly made himself unpopular with the Nazis because of his consistent manner. After his appointment to the Cathedral Chapter on February 11, 1941, he was arrested by the Gestapo on June 12, 1941 . After being transferred to Visselhövede , he was not allowed to be religious. He was also not allowed to leave the place. In August 1945 he returned to Münster and was appointed provost of the cathedral by Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen .

His task was to lead the reconstruction of the cathedral and other buildings of the diocese that had been destroyed by the war. Furthermore, he was a co-founder of the Christian-Jewish Cooperation and its temporary chairman. In 1964 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his various services. He died on January 19, 1968 at the age of 72.
