The Heidekreis-Klinikum is a municipal hospital run by the Heidekreis district . As the academic teaching hospital of the University of Hamburg , the Heidekreis-Klinikum (HKK) treats over 17,500 inpatients and around 55,000 outpatients annually in 10 specialist and occupational departments with around 1,200 employees at its two locations in Soltau and Walsrode .

The following hospital locations in Soltau and Walsrode belong to the clinic. The locations supply the rural district of Heidekreis with around 140,000 inhabitants in northeastern Lower Saxony in the Lüneburg Heath . In addition, the catchment area extends through the emergency medical service districts to the neighboring Rotenburg (Wümme) district to Visselhövede and Hemslingen .

The nursing education center is also located at the Walsrode site. The students work in practical work at both locations of the HKK, the Fallingbostel Clinic and outpatient and inpatient care services / facilities.

A medical care center is located in Soltau as well as in Walsrode. In Soltau there is a cardiological as well as a gynecological and obstetric practice. In Walsrode there are practices for general medicine , gastroenterology , gynecology and an oncological day clinic.

In 2018, the Lower Saxony Hospital Planning Committee endorsed the merger of the Soltau and Walsrode locations and promised around 130 million euros as funding from the state. Seven possible sites for a new clinic are currently in the planning process. The new overall clinic is expected to be built on one of them by 2027. There, all competencies are bundled at a central location so that they are no longer divided into two locations. A new building will accommodate 370 beds.

Cooperating institutions

The Heidekreis-Klinikum is an academic teaching hospital of the University of Hamburg. In addition, the Heidekreis-Klinikum has been bundling its medical expertise since 2014 in the hospital cooperation of the southern Lüneburg Heath with the General Hospital Celle and the Bad Bevensen Cardiovascular Center.

The HKK is also part of the Elbe-Heide Hospital Association of municipal hospitals. The Buchholz Hospital , the Winsen Hospital and the Lüneburg Municipal Hospital also belong to this hospital network .

There are cooperating radiological practices and dialysis practices at both locations.
