Achim Eschbach

Achim Eschbach (* 1948 in Eschweiler ) is a German semiotic . Until 2015 he taught as a professor of communication science at the University of Duisburg-Essen on the Essen campus .

His main research interests are the theory and history of semiotics. He is particularly interested in the works of Karl Bühler and Charles Sanders Peirce . As part of the Bühler Edition project , he is evaluating his estate and working on a complete edition of Bühler's works.

Life

Eschbach studied philosophy , German , sociology , politics and economics at RWTH Aachen University , where he received his doctorate in 1975 on the subject of “Pragma Semiotics and Theater”.

He completed his habilitation in the subjects of semiotics , history of science and philosophy of language at what was then the University of Essen . There he was initially appointed to a professorship for semiotics in communication design . After visiting professorships at the University of Tokyo and the Janos Pannonius University of Pécs , he accepted a professorship for communication studies in Essen.

Eschbach is married to Viktoria Eschbach-Szabo and has two daughters with her.

Act

From 1985 to 1987 he was a board member of the German Society for Semiotics . As the conference president, Eschbach led the fifth international congress of the German Society for Semiotics in Essen. He is also a member of numerous national and international scientific societies.

Together with Ernest WB Hess-Lüttich and Jürgen Trabant , he publishes the international semiotic specialist journal Kodikas / Code , which is published by Gunter Narr . In cooperation with Horst Pöttker ( Technical University Dortmund ) and Vinzenz Hediger ( Ruhr University Bochum ), the first communication science online review magazine r: k: m (reviews from communication and media) is created, which has been published by Herbert von Halem Verlag in Cologne since the beginning of 2009 becomes.
