The Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe (JUH) is an organization of the Order of St. John and is an evangelical aid organization . The JUH was founded in January 1952 under the leadership of Rudolf-Christoph von Gersdorff in Hanover , the first office was in Rolandseck . The main reason for this was the high number of injuries and deaths due to the increasing number of motor vehicle accidents. Today the JUH is better known under the name Die Johanniter . The organization's logo shows the white, eight-pointed St. John's Cross on a red, circular background with the inscription Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe . The JUH is connected with the religious organizations of other countries in the Johanniter International (JOIN). The Catholic sister organization is the Malteser Hilfsdienst .

Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e. V. in Germany (seat: Berlin) is divided into nine regional associations, which comprise over 200 local, district and regional associations.

Today, 37,218 volunteers and 21,850 full-time (full-time, part-time and marginally employed) members are involved. Almost 1.3 million people support the JUH as sponsoring members financially and ideally. The Johanniter are bearers of the DZI donation seal . In the youth organization of Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e. V. Johanniter-Jugend , 13,365 children and adolescents participate in school medical services and youth groups. The Johanniter-Jugend is a member of the working group of Protestant youth as well as in the network European movement (2017) .

The President of Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe has been Frank-Jürgen Weise since November 18, 2017 . Honorary presidents are Hans-Peter von Kirchbach and Wilhelm Graf Schwerin von Schwanenfeld . The federal management consists of Federal Pastor Matthias Meyer, Federal Doctor Jörg Oberfeld, Federal Training Director Jürgen Ule and Federal Youth Director Moritz Röver.

Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e. V. (JUH) is committed to Christian charity. As a work of the Order of St. John, it sees itself challenged by the needs and dangers of people in our time. Help from person to person is the central motif of the Johanniter.

The statutory tasks of Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe include:

Training: Johanniter is active both in broad training in first aid (for drivers who are new to driving licenses , companies, etc.) as well as in specialist training in the care of the elderly and the sick and in emergency medical services .

Ambulance service : The JUH operates 255 ambulance stations in Germany , which are manned by ambulances , ambulances or emergency doctor vehicles . Johanniter Luftrettung also operates six locations with intensive-care transport helicopters .

Medical watch service : At major events, for example of a cultural or sporting nature, mostly volunteer members provide the medical service . This reduces the workload of the local emergency services , as they are relieved of the care of minor medical emergencies (e.g. syncope, hypoglycaemia, cuts).
Water rescue

Medical rider squadron: Mounted medical units are used, particularly at events in areas that are difficult or difficult to drive, such as landscape protection areas, beaches and mudflat areas, but sometimes also to protect tourists in these areas (e.g. Lüneburg Heath ).

Civil protection and disaster control (short: KatS): The KatS has the task of coping with the consequences of major disasters . To this end, the JUH employs medical and care units provided by the federal government and the federal states. The tasks in disaster control are mainly carried out by volunteers. For example, all rescue dog teams are run on a voluntary basis. The JUH also has a network of teams for psychosocial emergency care (PSNV teams, crisis intervention and follow-up teams) in Germany.

Social services: The Johanniter look after children and young people (also in the school medical service ), people with special needs and the elderly. They operate or operate social stations, kindergartens and stationary senior citizens' facilities, home emergency calls and deliver meals on wheels (“menu service”). In 2005 they opened their first inpatient hospice and are involved in other outpatient hospice services . In addition, they are involved in the care of dementia patients and offer (self) help groups for relatives.

Foreign aid: Johanniter work in 30 countries around the world. They build this help on their medical core competence of the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe in Germany. This results in the central tasks of Johanniter Foreign Aid: medical emergency aid after disasters, support in restoring everyday civilian life in crisis areas, development of health services, medical education and training, the fight against infectious diseases and epidemics and orthopedic help for people with special needs and war wounded. The main focus is on basic medical care for people in disaster areas and particularly disadvantaged regions of the world.

Legal Status

Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e. V. is a registered association under private law within the meaning of the German Civil Code. According to the AO (tax code) it is recognized as charitable under tax law .

The JUH is a professional association of the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and is recognized as a voluntary aid society within the meaning of the 1st Geneva Convention (Art. 26). In this context, their legal status is regulated in the law on the German Red Cross and other voluntary aid societies within the meaning of the Geneva Red Cross Agreement .

Memberships

Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe is a member of Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH), an association of German aid organizations that want to jointly provide quick and effective help in the event of major disasters and emergency situations abroad. In the acute phase of major catastrophes abroad, the association turns to the public with a joint appeal for donations. In exceptional cases, Aktion Deutschland Hilft is also active in Germany.

In addition, the JUH is a member of the alliance against AIDS .

Every two years, the JUH awards the Hans Dietrich Genscher Prize to people who have made a special contribution to emergency rescue or rescue medicine.

Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe, Vienna

In Austria , Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe was founded on June 21, 1974 in Vienna , where it carried out ambulance transports with the first vehicle together with the Austrian Red Cross . Today the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe Österreich is a partner of the “ Four for Vienna ” rescue network: The four largest rescue organizations in Vienna ( ÖRK , ASBÖ , JUH, MHDA ) have been working together in the rescue service for several years. The emergency operations in Vienna are recorded centrally via the control center of the Vienna Rescue Service (MA 70) and then distributed to the organizations of the rescue network. Before that, the federal states had their own emergency numbers to contact Johanniter. In Carinthia, for example, the Johanniter did not switch to the nationally widespread emergency number 144 until 1999.

The JUH Austria has areas in Vienna, Orth an der Donau , Waidhofen an der Ybbs , Tyrol and Carinthia . The individual areas, however, have different focal points. In Vienna, Carinthia, Tyrol and Orth, the Johanniter u. a. Emergency rescue tasks fulfilled.

The JUH is represented at two locations in Vienna and offers various services. In addition to the ambulance and ambulance service, Johanniter operates an emergency nursing service in Vienna (formerly AID acute care service), which is available to every person in acute need of care, as well as ground-based blood and organ transports in cooperation with the transplant center at Vienna General Hospital. The emergency care service is financed by the Vienna Social Fund and donations. Johanniter also offer first aid courses in many parts of Austria. This is done either by commissioning the nearest local office or by sending specially responsible training vehicles from Vienna.

The Johanniter Accident Aid in Poland

The Johanniter had been involved in Germany's eastern neighboring state for over 20 years and had already set up 21 social stations. In the course of the eastward expansion of the European Community in May 2004, the Johanniter relief organization was founded, which started its work on August 31st. Together with the Polish Johanniter Foundation, which was established in 2003, it is primarily involved in the rescue service, outpatient care and youth work. Since it was founded, Joannici Dzieło Pomocy has seen constant growth, which will continue to exist due to the high demand for first aid courses.

St John Ambulance

St John Ambulance is a voluntary ambulance service in England and a sister organization of the Johanniter. The St John Ambulance is responsible for the medical service in the British barracks in Germany. Outside of the barracks area, it is rarely used. For example, the medical service during the soccer world championship in 2006 or at the Libori festival in Paderborn was carried out in cooperation with the Johannitern.
