Hans-Peter von Kirchbach (born August 3, 1941 in Weimar ) is a retired German general . D. From 1999 to 2000 he was the 12th General Inspector of the Bundeswehr . From January 2002 to November 2013 he was President of the German Johanniter Accident Aid .

Life

Hans-Peter von Kirchbach was born on August 3, 1941 in Weimar into an officer family, from which numerous officers , civil servants and Protestant pastors emerged since the 17th century .

In 1960 von Kirchbach joined the German Armed Forces, became a professional soldier and officer . After his general staff training , he served, among other things, in commander positions, so from 1979 to 1981 as battalion commander of the rocket artillery battalion 42 in the General von Steuben barracks in Hemau, Bavaria, and as commander / commander of military area command VIII / 14th Panzer Grenadier Division (1994-1998) in Neubrandenburg and then as Commanding General (KG) of the IV Corps in Potsdam . Two uses took place in the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) (1983–1985), including in the command staff of the Army (FüH) (1992–1994).

Kirchbach became known in public as the “hero of the Oder” when he led the Bundeswehr mission with 30,000 soldiers during the flood of the Oder in 1997 .

In 1998 he was appointed inspector general of the Bundeswehr at the suggestion of Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl . He took office after the change of government in April 1999. In 2000 he applied to Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping on June 20, 2000 for his temporary retirement. This sparked speculation about internal conflicts between von Kirchbach and Scharping.

From 1988 to 1991 von Kirchbach was national chairman of the Association of Christian Scouts and Boy Scouts . To this day he is active in the VCP Landesverband Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar. He is also President of the Association for the Promotion of the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr . He is also a member of the Clausewitz Society .

Kirchbach has been a member of the Order of St. John since 1999 and was made a legal knight in 2002. From January 2002 to November 2013 he was President of the German Johanniter Accident Aid .

Hans-Peter von Kirchbach is the cousin of Friederike von Kirchbach , who was Secretary General of the German Evangelical Church Congress from 2000 to 2005 .
