Jürgen Brandt

Jürgen Brandt (born October 19, 1922 in Kiel ; † July 26, 2003 in Meckenheim ) was a German officer , most recently in the rank of general , and from 1978 to 1983 Inspector General of the Bundeswehr .

Life and military background

Jürgen Brandt joined the Reich Labor Service at the age of 18 and then joined the Wehrmacht . He was trained and deployed in the infantry and was promoted to lieutenant as platoon leader in 1944 . After the Second World War , Brandt spent two years as a prisoner of war before he started working as a journalist . From 1950 he worked for the office of Gerhard Graf von Schwerin . After the Schwerin office was closed at the end of 1950, Brandt came to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) for two and a half years . In 1953 he moved to the Blank office , the forerunner of the Federal Ministry of Defense . In 1955 he was Head of Section II 1/4 (5) “Security Planning” in Main Section II 1/4 “Documentation and Military Security ”, which was headed by Achim Oster .

With the formation of the Bundeswehr , Brandt also had the opportunity to join the new armed forces. In 1957 he was hired as a captain in the Bundeswehr and as a company commander . After training as an officer in the General Staff Service , he worked for a time in a NATO command authority in the immediate vicinity of the German General Johann Adolf Graf von Kielmansegg , who was then Commander in Chief of the NATO armed forces in Central Europe. In several uses, Brandt then switched between security policy activities in the Federal Ministry of Defense and troop commands. The command of the 10th Panzer Division in Sigmaringen was outstanding . 1978 Brandt was in the rank of lieutenant general as German Military Representative (DMV) in the NATO Military Committee to Brussels sent, but after a few months back to Bonn recalled where he appointed in December 1978 to the Inspector General and the General was promoted. Brandt was retired on April 1, 1983.
