Johann Langenegger (born May 17, 1958 in Dachau ) is a Lieutenant General of the Army of the Bundeswehr and has been Deputy Inspector of the Army and Commander in the Army Command in Strausberg since August 30, 2018 .

Military career

Training and first uses

Langenegger joined the Bundeswehr on July 1, 1978 as an officer candidate with the 292 Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Immendingen . From 1979 to 1983 he was trained as an officer and studied pedagogy at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich , which he completed as a qualified pedagogue. After completing his studies, Langenegger served from 1984 to 1991 as platoon leader , intelligence officer ( S2 ) and company commander in Panzergrenadierbataillon 113 in Cham (Upper Palatinate) . From 1991 to 1993 he completed the 34th general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg .

Service as a staff officer

Following the general staff course, he was promoted to major and served from 1993 to 1995 at the Office for Studies and Exercises of the Federal Armed Forces in the Operations Research department in Ottobrunn as a study project officer for army development. From 1995 to 1997 Langenegger was deployed in Bad Reichenhall as operations and training staff officer (G3) in the staff of the Mountain Infantry Brigade 23 under the command of Colonel Wolf-Dieter Löser . From 1997 to 1999, Lieutenant Colonel Langenegger also took command of the 231 Mountain Infantry Battalion in Bad Reichenhall.

In 1999 he went back to the leadership academy and served there until 2001 as a tutor and lecturer for troop leadership in general staff training. From 2001 to 2003 he was employed in the Berlin Federal Ministry of Defense as a consultant in the area of ​​Bundeswehr planning and control in the planning staff under the direction of Lieutenant General Wolfgang Schneiderhan and later Franz HU Borkenhagen . From 2003 to 2005 Langenegger served as Deputy Executive Coordinator at the Director of the International Military Staff at NATO headquarters in Brussels .

Back in Germany, Langenegger was appointed personal advisor and office manager to Parliamentary State Secretary Friedbert Pflüger ( CDU ) from 2005 to 2006 . After Pflüger left, Langenegger held the same position for Thomas Kossendey (CDU) until 2009 .

Service as a general

On May 15, 2009 Langenegger finally took over command of the Mountain Infantry Brigade 23 from Brigadier General Erich Pfeffer in Bad Reichenhall , which he led until May 16, 2012. With effect from November 1, 2009, Langenegger was appointed Brigadier General.

From April 27, 2012 to June 4, 2013, Langenegger served as Manfred Hofmeyer's successor in the 10th Panzer Division in Sigmaringen as deputy division commander and commander of the division troops. Since the post of commander with the transfer of Erhard Bühler remains vacant until the division is dissolved, Langenegger led it until then.

From May 2014 to February 23, 2017 he was - with the rank of major general - commander of the 1st Panzer Division in Oldenburg. He handed over this post to Brigadier General Markus Laubenthal .

On June 11, 2017, Langenegger, while being promoted to Lieutenant General, took over from Lieutenant General Jürgen Weigt as Chief of Staff for the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. On June 16, 2018, he handed over the official business to Lieutenant General Alfons Mais . On August 30, 2018, Langenegger took over the post of Lieutenant General Carsten Jacobson as Deputy Inspector of the Army and Commander of the Army Command in Strausberg .
