The Bundeswehr Mission Medal is an award for German and foreign military personnel . The medal has a diameter of 35 mm and bears the federal eagle in a stylized laurel wreath on the obverse . The back is free. The medal is worn on a 30 mm wide ribbon, which consists of a red base ribbon with black, red and gold edges.

Emergence

The donated on 25 April 1996 medal was first and unique retroactively on 26 June 1996 for use abroad as part of UN -Kontingent the UN Protection Force in Croatia ( UNPF ) by the then Federal Minister of Defense Volker Ruhe awarded. The medal is awarded in a single embossing in bronze, silver or gold and differs only in the designation on the clasp of the same color as the medal (see list below). The silver and gold version of the medal was donated on January 28, 2003. The medal can be awarded for the same service alongside other medals, e.g. B. the UN medal , the European Union mission medal or the NATO medal for the same operational area.

In November 2010 the combat medal was donated as a special level of the Bundeswehr's medal . It was first awarded on November 25, 2010 by the then Federal Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg retrospectively posthumously to a German soldier who fell on April 29, 2009 near Kunduz, the corporal Sergej Motz, and presented to his relatives.

After numerous requests from the troops, the long-term demands of the Federal Commissioner for Defense and motions from the Bundestag, the then Federal Minister of Defense Ursula von der Leyen decided in May 2019 the cut-off date for this decoration from June 30, 1995 to November 1, 1991 to bring forward. This also makes it possible to award the Bundeswehr Mission Medal to 2,600 members of the Bundeswehr who served in the UN operations UNAMIC , UNOSOM , UNTAC and UNAMIR in Southeast Asia and Central Africa . At the same time, the Minister donated four new mission medals for the UN missions UNAMIC (October 1991 to March 1992) and UNTAC (May 1992 to November 1993) in Cambodia , UNOSOM in Somalia (August 1992 to March 1994) and UNAMIR in Rwanda (July to December 1994).

Foundation purpose

The Bundeswehr Mission Medal is a visible sign of participation in missions or special uses abroad in the context of humanitarian, peacekeeping or peacemaking measures for all soldiers of the Bundeswehr and their civilian employees.

Award criteria

The prerequisites that lead to the award of the mission medal are the following service periods in the context of missions or special assignments:

  1. for the bronze medal: 30 days
  2. for the silver medal: 360 days
  3. for the gold medal: 690 days

in the field of deployment or operation. The service does not have to have been performed in a contiguous manner. People who do not meet these minimum time requirements can still be honored with the medal of the appropriate level. However, the head of the Federal President's Office decides on this. In the event of injury or death during an operation, the medal can also be awarded posthumously and without the minimum time requirement.

Disclaimer

The Bundeswehr medal can also be withdrawn again, namely for persons with a criminal record for whom the same provisions apply, which can also lead to the withdrawal of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . Incidentally, in the event of a breach of duty during the missions or in the special use, the award of the mission medal can be excluded.

Award practice

The award of the mission medal must take place in a dignified framework. Those on loan receive a document signed by the Federal Minister of Defense, which also bears the small federal seal. When it is awarded, the medal becomes the property of the recipient. In exceptional cases, the mission medal can also be awarded to members of foreign armed forces if they have rendered special services to the armed forces in the context of the missions or special assignments.

On special official occasions, state receptions / state acts or for private reasons at special social events, both service medals and combat medals can be worn in original size on official and (in miniature) formal suits.

Appearance

The medal is bronze, silver or gold colored, has a diameter of 35 mm and shows in the center of its obverse the embossed federal eagle within two open laurel branches that are crossed at the bottom and bent upwards. The lapel is smooth and blank. The 30 mm wide red ribbon has a black, red and gold border. The clasp of the insert or special use, which is bronze, silver or gold according to the awarded grade, must be attached to the medal ribbon.
