The NATO Medal is a NATO award for military personnel who have participated in NATO-led missions abroad (e.g. SFOR , KFOR or ISAF ).

A different form of NATO medal was awarded for the SFOR (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and KFOR (Kosovo) missions. These differ in the ribbon as well as the inscription on the award and the clasp on the ribbon buckle .

It can be worn by active and former soldiers of the Bundeswehr . The Bundeswehr Mission Medal and the associated NATO medal are usually awarded in an honorable ceremony, the Medal Parade , in the country of deployment. If the NATO medal is worn by active and former soldiers of the German Armed Forces, they have to procure the strap buckle in the 25 mm version themselves, as only the 25 mm version is allowed on the service suit .

At the beginning of the SFOR operations, the NATO medal was only awarded at the home location due to delivery problems.

Was a soldier more than once in the same operational area, e.g. B. at SFOR, then he receives the NATO medal again, but then there is a "2" attached to the strap buckle, which means that the soldier in the example has already been on SFOR twice.

Meritorious Service Medal

The NATO Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) was first awarded in 2003 to commend NATO personnel whose personal initiative and commitment went beyond their normal duty to make a difference for both their peers and NATO as an organization. The medal is the personal award of the Secretary General of NATO, who approves each award. Approximately 150 medals are awarded each year and it is the only award for personal commitment by NATO personnel. The medal can be awarded to both military and civilian personnel. Several criteria are considered in evaluating nominations for the award: performing courageous acts in difficult or dangerous circumstances; exceptional leadership or personal role model; making an outstanding individual contribution to a NATO-sponsored program or activity; or coping with particular difficulties or hardships in the interests of NATO. The NATO Meritorious Service Medal is approved for wearing on uniforms of NATO countries.
