The Elbsche is a left-hand tributary of the Ruhr .
course
It rises “im Langenbruch” in Albringhausen, a district of Wetter (Ruhr) and flows into the Ruhr after about 7.5 km in Wetter-Wengern . In parts it forms the border between the two cities of Wetter and Witten .
The Witten – Schwelm railway, also known as the Elbschetalbahn, runs for a long stretch parallel to the stream. In the upper reaches, the railway line dominates the valley as a valley cut, which pushes the Elbe to the edge. A cycling and hiking trail is currently being built on the railway line that will follow the river for almost its entire course.
In 1902, the meadow owners in the Elbschebachtal formed a cooperative . The aim was to improve the Elbsche between Wengerner Mühle and Ratelbecke. In this area, irrigation and drainage ditches were dug up to 1904 in order to cultivate the meadows and optimize the course of the Elbe. Further sections were worked on later. Some streams disappeared due to the mining. From 1908 this led to a legal dispute with the Trappe colliery . The situation has improved over the years. The Elbsche now offers nature many retreats again.
The Elbschetal between the village of Albringhausen and Wengern is now a designated nature reserve.
Its catchment area is largely dominated by agriculture , so that, together with the great difference in altitude between the source and its mouth, the water flow of the Elbe can increase sharply after heavy rainfall .
Sights along the stream are:
- former Neu-Wülfingsburg colliery
- Village center and Albringhausen train station
