The nature reserve Elbschebach Witten Bommerholz is a 32- hectare nature reserve in the Elbe Valley , which is located across borders in the two district towns of Witten and Wetter (Ruhr) in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was set up in 1984 in the course of drawing up the landscape plan for the Ennepe-Ruhr district and has the object identifier EN-007.

Around 52.5 percent of the protected area area belongs to the Witten city area ( Bommerholz , Vormholz district ), and around 47.5 percent to the Wetteran city area ( Esborn and Wengern districts ). At around 1.6 km in length within the nature reserve, the Elbsche represents the municipal boundary between Witten and Wetter.

area

The Elbsche is an almost 8 km long low mountain range that flows into the Ruhr when coming from the south . The nature reserve stretches along the creek for a good 1.9 km of its middle course . On both sides of the stream, the floodplains and, in some cases, the adjacent slope areas are included in the area. The protected area border is at least 6 m and a maximum of 245 m away from the water. There is a height difference of 58 m within the area.

In the south, just outside of the protected area, a fish pond is managed on the Ratelbecke . Other ponds are down stream to the north of the nature reserve, on Mühlenfeld in Wengerner mill . The mouth hole of Friedrich Wilhelm Erbstolln of the former Flachsteich colliery is located in the partially cordoned off northern part of the nature reserve (private property) directly on the Elbe . In the south-west of the forest, about 80 m from the nature reserve, is the blasting site of the former Bommerholz dynamite factory (1878–1898, later the Rheinische Dynamitfabrik dynamite store; from there, quarries and mines in the Ruhr area were supplied with explosives for a while).

The NSG boundaries are mostly formed by streets and paths, in the east partly by the wooded embankment of the former Elbschetalbahn .

Protection goals

The primary protection goals for the NSG are the preservation of the structurally rich stream floodplain with swamp forests and wet fallow land, as well as the preservation or restoration of the natural stream course.

tourism

The nature reserve is embedded in forest areas that are used for local recreation . Several paths run through the area, which are of varying degrees of ease. Some sections in the northern part are developed as forest roads. Other sections, especially along the southwest border of the area, are part of the local network of hiking trails . There are also some beaten tracks , mostly on old farm roads, which are either heavily overgrown or, thanks to the proximity of the water and illegal use by riders, mostly very muddy and hardly usable without rubber boots.

In principle, the mandatory routes apply in the nature reserve .
