The nature reserve Kluterthöhle and Bismarckhöhle with an area of 18.65  hectares is located in the area of the city of Ennepetal in North Rhine-Westphalia . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated for the first time in 1937. 1964 and 1999 were expelled again. In 1999 this happened with the landscape plan for the Ennepetal / Gevelsberg / Schwelm area of the Ennepe-Ruhr district by the district council of the Ennepe-Ruhr district . The Gevelsberger Stadtwald nature reserve is located near the northern end of the NSG.

Area description

In the NSG there is a cleft cave system with Klutert cave and Bismarck cave in an approximately 12 m thick reef limestone layer of the Upper Middle Devonian underground of the Klutertberg . The Klutert cave is the longest natural cave in Germany with a total length of 5500 m and over 300 passages. The Bismarck Cave is much smaller. Former limestone quarries can be found in small areas in the NSG. Limestone rocks with a corresponding vegetation are particularly close to the summit of the Klutertberg. There is a limestone beech forest on the hilltop and in small areas in the lower slope area. The rest of the forest, on more acidic soils, mostly bears young to middle-aged oak-beech forest. Older trees are only available locally. In the northern part of the NSG there are fallow areas of grassland.

The caves in the NSG, which have a constant temperature of 10 ° C, are important as wintering quarters for bats. A total of 208 animal species have been identified in the caves, but several of them can no longer be identified today.

Protection purpose

The NSG was designated as a nature reserve especially for the preservation of communities and habitats of wild animal species, especially within the caves .
