The Gevelsberger Stadtwald nature reserve with an area of ​​501.33  hectares is located in the area of ​​the cities of Gevelsberg and Ennepetal in North Rhine-Westphalia . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1999 with the landscape plan for the Ennepetal / Gevelsberg / Schwelm area of ​​the Ennepe-Ruhr district by the district council of the Ennepe-Ruhr district . It consists of two sub-areas. The NSG goes in the northeast to the city limits. The Aske nature reserve borders directly in the city of Hagen . Both NSG's belong to the Gevelsberger Stadtwald FFH area . The nature reserve Kluterthöhle and Bismarckhöhle is located near the southwest end of the NSG.

The NSG includes extensive grove - beech forests with notched valleys and natural streams with creek-accompanying alder - ash forests. There are also former oak - birch - coppice forests. Forest areas with sycamore maple , white pine , spruce and larch also occur. In addition to the forest, there are areas with fruit pastures and, in wider valleys, pastures and fallow wet pastures. The highest mountain is the Buchenberg with 330 m. Other mountains are around 300 m high.

Protection purpose

The NSG was designated as a nature reserve for the preservation and restoration of communities or habitats of certain wild plant and wild animal species as well as for the preservation and development of nationally significant biotopes of rare and endangered as well as typical wild plant and animal species of European importance .
