The Saure Epscheid nature reserve (NSG identification EN-008) is located in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Breckerfeld in the Ennepe-Ruhr district . It was identified with the landscape plan for the Breckerfeld area in 1987 by the district council of the Ennepe-Ruhr district. It is around three hectares in size and includes a section of the Sauren Epscheid stream valley . This is located in a forest area in the east of the city between the districts of Epscheid and Bühren . In the north, in the city of Hagen , the nature reserve Bachtal Saure Epscheid connects directly.

Area description

In terms of natural space, the area belongs to the Dahler Volmeschlucht within the Märkisches Oberland in the Rhenish Slate Mountains . The Saure Epscheid is a small low mountain range ( LAWA river type 5 ), which at the confluence with the Süßen Epscheid becomes the Epscheider Bach , which in turn flows into the Volme .

The nature reserve extends over an approximately 800-meter-long section of the stream and corresponds to the valley floor running in a north-south direction ; it has only narrow widths between approx. 25 and 70 meters. There is a height difference of around 29 m within the area. The Bachtal is accompanied by steep slopes; it is cut around 100 meters deep into the mountains and is geomorphologically one of the sole notch valleys ( notch valley with a narrow valley bottom).

Just like the surrounding slope areas, the NSG is almost completely wooded. The brook-alder-ash forest with a corresponding herb layer is characteristic in the bank area . The vegetation by the stream comes very close to the potential natural vegetation . Butterbur and tall herbaceous vegetation occur in small areas . In less humid peripheral areas there are transitions from the loose ash-alder-alluvial forest to the oak-hornbeam forest . Some parts of the area were formerly used as grassland ; however, the succession to the forest was well advanced by the end of the 20th century.

The meandering stream divides in the NSG several times and thus creates habitats characterized by moisture and small-scale changes. It accommodates several spring brooks (small sieves ) flowing in from the side and is in parts itself formed like a spring brook with accompanying spring corridors . The sloping stream bed is stony and, due to the high water quality (purity), is populated with many, also rare , caddis fly larvae , planarians and other invertebrates, as well as with demanding water mosses .

Protection goals

The protection of the area mainly serves to maintain a near-natural biotope complex , i. H. of the stream course with accompanying floodplain, in particular the stream-alder-ash forest. The valley area with the brook is to be left to natural development through extensive renunciation of use. Conversion has already taken place or is planned to be gradual only on smaller areas with alien tree species.

tourism

The nature reserve is accompanied by forest and hiking trails on both sides of the narrow valley . The Bachaue in between can be seen from the paths. The eastern path is also part of an educational forest trail . Since a strict route requirement applies to all nature reserves in the Ennepe-Ruhr district and there are no roads through this area (the actual floodplain area), the protected area may not be entered.
