The Dahler Volmeschlucht is a natural sub-unit with the order number 336 1 .20 of the Volme, Nahmer and Lennetal gorges (336 1 .2) within the Märkisches Oberland (336 1 ). According to the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany, it includes the mostly wooded valleys of the Volme, which are deeply carved into the Hülscheid plateau (336 1 .3), the Breckerfeld plateau (336 1 .2) and the Halver-Lüdenscheider plateau (336 1 .6) and its tributaries between Lüdenscheid - Oberbrügge and Hagen .

The Hagen districts of Dahl and Rummenohl , as well as the center of Schalksmühle and the Lüdenscheid district of Bruges are located in widened areas of the Volme valley . The Hagen – Dieringhausen railway line (Volmetalbahn) and the federal road 54 follow the course of the Volme through the natural area and almost completely fill the main valley between Rummenohl and Dahl. There the winding river cuts through hard diabase ducts in narrow passages .

In addition to the Volmetal, which is cut 200 m deep into the Rump Mountains, the lateral notch valleys of the Linnepe below Oedenthal Castle , the Hälver below the Heesfelder Mühle and the Schlechtenbach and the Bräumke below Mittelcarthausen , the Glör below the Glörtalsperre , the Death Corner below the Rölveder Mühle , the Epscheider Bach with the source brooks Saure Epscheid , Süße Epscheid and the Langscheider Bach on the Krägeloher Berg , the Asmecke and the Rumscheider Bach near Hagen-Dahl and the Hamperbach below the Hampermühle to the natural area.

The lively gradient of the Volme of 7.5 ‰ favored the settlement of numerous proto-industrial water mills and hammer mills . The river often overflows during floods, but carries little water in dry seasons. With a few exceptions, the narrowness of the valley prevented the development of larger towns.
