Markus Laubenthal (born December 4, 1962 in Aachen ) is a Lieutenant General of the Army of the Bundeswehr and has been Deputy Inspector General of the Bundeswehr since April 1, 2020 .

Military career

Training and first uses

Laubenthal joined the German Armed Forces in 1982 as a basic military service member with the 33rd Panzer Battalion in Neustadt am Rübenberge ( Luttmersen ). It concluded between 1983 and 1985, the training to become a reserve officer and officer in the Armored Corps at the Army Officers' Academy in Hanover and the Armor School in Munster on. From 1985 to 1989 Laubenthal was again deployed as platoon leader officer in Panzer Battalion 33 in Neustadt am Rübenberge. This was followed by assignments as staff officer S 2 ( military intelligence ) in the 33rd Panzer Battalion and as an adjutant to the commander of the 1st Panzer Division in Hanover. In this role also from January to July 1991 as a staff officer S 2 in the guard regiment (later Jägerbataillon 1 ) in Berlin . From 1991 to 1993 assignment as a youth officer in Schwerin . From 1993 to 1997 two assignments followed as company commander of the 4th and the 6th (non-commissioned training company) in the 203 tank battalion in Hemer . From 1997 to 1999 Laubenthal took part in the 40th General Staff Course (Army) at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg .

Service as a staff officer

The first employment as a staff officer led Laubenthal as head of principle for operations management at the Army Office (Department I) in Cologne . He then took the Advanced Command & Staff Course (Class 5) at the Joint Services Command & Staff College in Shrivenham, Great Britain. This was combined with a degree in Defense Studies at King's College in London , which he completed as a Master of Arts . From 2003 to 2005 he was in command of the 203 tank battalion in Hemer. This was followed by a ministerial assignment as Referent  V 1 NATO and UN Mission Fundamentals in the command staff of the armed forces and as an officer in the general staff service with the Chief of Staff of the Army Command in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn . From 2007 to 2008 Laubenthal was Head of G3 Planning, Organization, Training and Exercises in the Air Mobility Operations Division in Veitshöchheim . From 2008 to 2010 he was group leader G3 operations and then department head G3 in the Army Command in Koblenz . From 2010 to 2012 he was employed as a ministerial head of the European Security Policy, bilateral relations with European and African states in the planning staff of the Federal Minister of Defense and Head of Division Pol II 1 Strategic Guidelines Bundeswehr; Central tasks in the Department of Politics in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin.

Service as a general

From September 1, 2012 to July 31, 2014, Laubenthal was the commander of Panzer Brigade 12 Oberpfalz in Amberg . From August 2014 to January 2016, Laubenthal was Chief of Staff of the US Army Europe in Wiesbaden . This was the first time that a German general was given this task. His successor in this post was Brigadier General Kai Rohrschneider . As a farewell, he was awarded the Legion of Merit . On February 16, 2017, Laubenthal took over the post as commander of the 1st Panzer Division from Major General Johann Langenegger . In this post he was also promoted to major general . As the successor to Lieutenant General Klaus von Heimendahl , Laubenthal became Head of the Armed Forces Department in the Federal Ministry of Defense on May 1, 2018 . Shortly afterwards, he was appointed lieutenant general at this post . Since April 1, 2020, Laubenthal has been Deputy Inspector General of the Bundeswehr as the successor to Vice Admiral Joachim Rühle .

  • 09/2002 to 05/2003 Military Assistant at the Deputy Commander Operations and the Assistant Chief of Staff Operations at the KFOR headquarters in Pristina ( Kosovo )
